Vegetarian Or Not, Let’s Talk About Breakfast

Vegetarian Or Not, Let’s Talk About Breakfast

What is your breakfast personality? We all have one.  Grab and go? Sit and enjoy? Skip all together? Does the drive-thru save the day for you? Vegetarian or not, let’s talk about breakfast!

Some say that what you eat for breakfast is indicative of your inherent personality.  Are you a bowl of oats type of person? This has been found to indicate you are an early riser + a planner.  Do you fill your bowl with sugary cereal? Maybe you aren’t ready to kiss your childhood goodbye.  Old fashioned eggs + toast? You are a classic, through and through.  Where are my avocado toast lovers? Yep, you love to jump on the trendy train.

Let’s Talk About A Savory Breakfast?

Far too many people reach for sweet foods in the morning.  Some out of convenience, some out of habit, others because they think that is what breakfast “should” be.  Nope! When you choose a savory breakfast you tend to eat more fiber, vegetables, and protein. These build the foundation for blood sugar stability, keeps us feeling fuller longer, and prevents mood swings. Don’t get stuck in a breakfast rut.  You’ve heard this from me before … the moment between stimulus and response is where habit lies.  Make your breakfast habit a good one.

Breakfast And Intermittent Fasting

Typically, intermittent fasting means not eating a traditional breakfast.  Many people doing intermittent fasting push the “breakfast” meal to the lunchtime hour.  Breakfast means ‘breaking the fast’.  It does not matter what time of day that is for you.  If you are into intermittent fasting, that would be later than the typical standard breakfast time, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy healthy breakfast foods full of fiber + nutrients any time of day.

Vegetarian Or Not, Let’s Talk About Breakfast ‘Rules’

Food rules can be a slippery slope into disordered eating behaviors.  However, most people enjoy having some ‘guidelines’ over what to start the day with.  Some people struggle so much with breakfast cravings.   A cold slice of pizza anyone? Yep. Leftover take-out for breakfast? Yep. Toss every vegetable in your freezer in a blender? Yep. Donuts for breakfast? Yep. It’s just all over the place.  People tend to feel confused and conflicted about breakfast. Let go of the rules and follow these general guidelines: eat when you are hungry, if you are working out, fuel your workout, focus on macronutrients (protein, carbs, fat), then incorporate micronutrients.

Tara’s Breakfast “Rules”

  • Your breakfast needs to fit your lifestyle. Quit comparing yourself to others. It never ends well.
  • Try to choose real + whole foods above packaged foods when possible. (Guide To Mood Boosting Foods)
  • Be prepared in advance so that you aren’t grabbing the quickest (yet not the healthiest) option. (10 Things To Do On Weekends To Make Cooking Easier)
  • Routinely reevaluate your choices+ routines, adjust if they aren’t working.
  • Food monotony can actually be a good thing. (Is Dietary Variety Really That Important?)
  • Limit refined carbohydrates + simple sugars as your first morning go-to as these can set you up for mood swings, a blood sugar roller coaster, and the endless cycle of hunger. (The Truth About Carbs: Good vs Bad Carbs)
  • Potatoes are not the only acceptable breakfast vegetable. Don’t be afraid of eating any or all vegetables for your first meal of the day. (Why You Should Be Eating Green)
  • Fiber + fiber + fiber + fiber. Every meal needs fiber, even the first one of the day.
  • Shocking fact coming your way: you have the right to choose what you want to eat when you want to eat it … even for breakfast.
  • Remember … the moment between stimulus and response is where habit lies.  Make your breakfast habit a good one.
