Tara’s Tips for Easy Batata Poha Recipe Success:

  • Soak the poha for only 5 minutes, not longer! The flakes will get too mushy.
  • Meanwhile, microwave the potatoes to cut down on cook time. If you don’t use a microwave, increase the cook time on the potatoes with the cover on your pan prior to adding the poha flakes.
  • If you don’t have curry leaves available, don’t worry, just leave them out.
  • Certainly, you could leave out the raisins and sugar. This is totally optional.  However, a little sugar gives a slightly sweet balance to the spicy and savory wonderfulness of this dish.
  • Adjust the spice level. We use one teaspoon of chopped jalapeno and 1/2 teaspoon of crushed red pepper powder for our spice level. Be careful not to make it too spicy. If you prefer, you can wait until the end to check the spice level, and add more red pepper at that time.

Easy Batata Poha

September 4, 2019
: 6 servings

Bataka Poha is a traditional Indian dish served for breakfast, brunch, lunch, or snack made from flattened rice flakes, potatoes, onions, and spices.

Ingredients
  • 2 cups poha flakes
  • 2 potatoes (white or yellow)
  • 1 onion (diced)
  • 2 tsp avocado oil
  • 1 tsp mustard seeds
  • 1 tsp cumin seeds
  • 10 fresh curry leaves
  • 1/2 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1/2 tsp ground red pepper powder (more to taste)
  • 1 tsp finely chopped jalapeno
  • 3/4 cup peanuts or cashews
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 1 tsp fresh lemon juice cilantro leaves for garnish
Directions
  • Step 1 First, place poha flakes in a medium size bowl, then add enough water to the bowl to cover the flakes. Set timer for 5 minutes. Allow flakes to soak in water for 5 minutes, then drain water and set aside.
  • Step 2 While poha is soaking, peel potatoes, dice into small squares, rinse thoroughly. Place on single layer on glass plate and microwave potatoes for 3 minutes. Set aside.
  • Step 3 Next, heat oil in medium size pan over medium heat, add mustard seeds and cumin seeds. Once the seeds begin to ‘pop’, add curry leaves and let sizzle, then add diced onion, sprinkle the onion with 2 tsp salt to prevent burning and sticking. If onions start to stick, drizzle with water. Saute onions for 2 minutes.
  • Step 4 Add peanuts or cashews and saute with the onion an additional 2 minutes. Be careful not to burn or over-brown the onions and nuts. Turn your heat down if needed.
  • Step 5 Add the chopped jalapeno and mix with the onion/nut mixture.
  • Step 6 Fold in the microwaved potatoes to the pan, do not over-stir your mixture as you will break up the potatoes too much. Stir enough to combine all ingredients. Cover and let cook over medium heat for 3-5 minutes or until you can easily insert a fork into the potatoes.
  • Step 7 Add the turmeric powder and ground red pepper powder if you desire to increase the spice level, add more red pepper powder.
  • Step 8 Fold in the soaked and drained poha flakes. Gently give the mixture a stir, add white raisins (optional) and sugar (optional) cover and cook for 2 additional minutes.Check spice and salt level and be sure the potatoes are fully cooked.
  • Step 9 Once done, sprinkle with lemon juice and garnish with cilantro. Eat or serve, enjoy!
