Tara’s Tips For Perfect Oil-Free Avocado Hummus
- Chickpeas:
- Use 1 can (drained and rinsed)
- Or you can start with dry beans: place one cup of beans + 3 cups of water in instant pot, press manual and adjust timer to 60 minutes, allow pressure to release naturally, drain and cool.
- One and a half cups of cooked garbanzo beans = 1 can.
- How To Make Hummus Oil-Free:
- The SECRET ingredient in making perfect oil-free hummus? ICE WATER! Yep, you heard me correctly. Ice water. Works every time to create perfect consistency and you do not need the oil.
- Tahini:
- Make sure your tahini only has one ingredient: sesame seeds! You don’t need anything else in there!!!! Check your labels!
- Jalapeños:
- This is what determines the spice level. I use 2 jalapeños when I make this recipe because we like it spicy. If you are sensitive to spice, remove the seeds from the jalapeño or start with 1/2. You can always add more after you taste test.
- Serving Ideas:
- With your favorite veggies, crackers, tortilla chips, pita bread, in a wrap, on a sandwich, rolled into a wrap, as an appetizer for a party or game day or just this as salad dressing on a salad.
- Leftovers:
- Store in a glass, airtight container or jar for up to 7 days. This does not freeze well because it does not defrost with a good consistency.
- Want a More Creamy Hummus?
- Peel the chickpeas! This is time consuming but if you want a really smooth hummus, pop the shells off of every little chickpea in the can!

Oil-Free Avocado Hummus Recipe

Ingredients
- 1 avocado
- 14 ounce can of chickpeas or 3 1/2 cups cooked chickpeas
- 3 cloves garlic
- 2 tbsp lime juice
- 1/2 cup fresh cilantro
- 1-2 jalapeños (to taste)
- 1/4 cup tahini
- 1 1/2 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup ice cubes
Directions
- Step 1 Place everything in a high speed blender and blend until smooth. Add more water one tablespoon at a time to thin out if needed.
- Step 2 Serve with chips, crackers, veggies, in a wrap, on a salad or toast, enjoy!
