How To Sauté Frozen Spinach

How To Sauté Frozen Spinach

Easy, healthy, ready in minutes, vegan + gluten free?? Count me in!  Doesn’t everyone love spinach? Maybe not.  Let me try that again.  Doesn’t everyone need spinach? YES! Everyone can love spinach, you just need to cook it correctly! You have come to the right place! Let’s find out how to sauté frozen spinach!

Spinach is loaded with Vitamin A and iron, and makes the perfect side dish! However, the problem with spinach is that you buy that giant plastic tub, it takes up an enormous amount of space in the refrigerator, you don’t use it, and then it goes bad and you throw it away. Sound familiar?

Well, I offer you two options.  Before that giant tub of spinach spoils, place it in a freezer bag and toss it in the freezer until you are really ready to use it.  Second option? Buy frozen spinach! Takes up less space, is there when you need it, and is equally as nutritious and delicious as fresh spinach.

Tara’s Tips For How To Sauté Frozen Spinach:

  1. Thaw out a 10 oz package of spinach (takes about 2 hours from a fully frozen state or remove spinach from the bag and microwave in one minute increments until fully thawed)
  2. Once your spinach is thawed out, wash your hands, and squeeze all of the water you can out of the spinach, discard the water, set spinach aside. *This is super important! Squeeze the water out so you don’t have soggy spinach!*
  3. Peel 4 cloves of garlic and slice thin.
  4. Heat 2 tsp olive oil in a medium cast iron pan or non-stick skillet over medium-high heat.
  5. Once oil is hot, add garlic and cook about 2 minutes or until the garlic is slightly golden brown.
  6. Add the spinach and continue to cook, stirring intermittently to avoid sticking, for 5 minutes or until spinach begins to crisp.
  7. Turn off heat and let spinach sit in hot pan for an additional 5 minutes to dry out a little bit more *this is the key to getting frozen spinach to taste good! let it sit in the pan on the burner to dry out with the heat off*
  8. Add salt to taste and/or red pepper flakes.

If You Don’t Use Oil:

Place your drained spinach in a non-stick pan, sprinkle with 2 tsp garlic powder + 1 tsp salt.  Sauté according to the instructions above stirring intermittently to prevent sticking. Add 1 tbsp vegetable broth or water at a time if your spinach is sticking.
