These BBQ Chickpea Veggie Burgers are perfect for a summer picnic, party or BBQ! They are also super healthy + packed with plant-based protein making them perfect for a weeknight dinner or weekend lunch meal! This easy recipe that can be pulled together in under an hour with a few simple ingredients.
I love a good veggie burger. I also love creating recipes and everyone in my family tells me turned out awesome. First time. Nailed it! It think part of the awesome is the BBQ sauce! Ever since I perfected my recipe for Easy Homemade Vegan Barbeque Sauce I just can’t be stopped! Not only did I add it to these fabulous burgers, I added it to Air Fryer BBQ Chickpeas and Air Fryer BBQ Cauliflower, yum!
Tara’s Tips For Perfect Chickpea Veggie Burgers:
- Use rolled oats not steel cut or instant.
- Don’t over pulse the mixture in your food processor. Stop pulsing when everything is mixed.
- If you have time, put the mixture in the refrigerator for 30 minutes to set prior to shaping into patties.
- Make sure your burgers are done before removing from the oven! Check to make sure they are not mushy inside + leave them in with the oven turned off if they are still wet after the 40 minutes. Mine take 38 minutes.
- Make it a double stack! One bun + 2 patties + loads of toppings 😋
- Topping ideas include extra BBQ sauce, lettuce, tomato, jalapeno peppers, red onion, ketchup, mustard, or shredded cabbage. Totally awesome topped with Vegan Chipotle Mayo.
- Serve on hamburger buns, in pita bread, in your favorite wrap, on a salad, over a bed of greens or on top of quinoa.
- Leftovers? These store perfectly in the freezer or refrigerator. When you are ready to reheat them, they are awesome browned in a skillet or the microwave works fine too.

BBQ Chickpea Veggie Burgers
Turn a can of chickpeas into a vegan + gluten-free BBQ Chickpea burger! The perfect, healthy plant-pbased lunch or dinner.
Ingredients
- 2 cans chickpeas (or 3 cups cooked) drained + rinsed
- 2/3 cup old fashioned rolled oats (NOT steel cut oatmeal)
- 2 cups coarsely chopped onions
- 4 cloves garlic
- 2/3 cup BBQ sauce (see body of post for recipe for homemade BBQ sauce or use store-bought)
Directions
- Step 1 Preheat oven to 400 degrees F.
- Step 2 Place all ingredients into a food processor and process until fully combined. Do not overmix.
- Step 3 Form into 8 burger patties (approximately 2/3 cup each).
- Step 4 Place patties on a silicone lined baking sheet. Bake in 400 degree oven for 20 minutes. Flip each patty over and bake for another 15-20 minutes. Mine take 38 minutes total.
- Step 5 Serve on a bun with lettuce, tomato, pickles, onion, shredded cabbage, avocado, or whatever else you like to top your burger with!
