4-ingredient Spicy Marinara Sauce

4-ingredient Spicy Marinara Sauce

The easiest marinara sauce you will ever make now with a spicy twist! A few years ago I shared a 3-ingredient tomato sauce recipe. One of the most delicious things I have on this blog. I mean seriously delicious. I took that recipe and spiced it up! The original of this recipe made Marcella Hazan a very popular woman in the world of Italian cooking. The original is on regular rotation in the MVF kitchen. Now, it has been given a spicy upgrade with this 4-ingredient Spicy Marinara Sauce.

Tara’s Tips for making PERFECT 4-Ingredient Spicy Marinara Sauce

  • Tomatoes

    • You will need one 28 oz of San Marzano tomatoes. These are the only tomatoes that will work in this recipe! Crushed or whole are both fine.
  • Butter

    • 4 tablespoons of butter. Don’t mess with it because it works! I use Miyoko’s vegan butter but you can use any dairy or vegan butter you prefer.
  • Onion

    • One onion peeled and cut in half. White or yellow, not red.
    • After your sauce simmers for 45 minutes, you have the option of removing the onion and discarding or chopping it up and eating it as part of your sauce. We opt to keep the onion as it gives a nice texture and flavor. Alternatively, you could blitz the sauce with an immersion blender a few times to break up the onion.
  • Β
  • Pepper

    • One ghost pepper sliced in half. It is spicy! Feel free to substitute a few chili peppers in place of the ghost pepper, but if you have access to a ghost pepper, use it! Be sure you use gloves when handling a ghost pepper.
  • Done in under one hour

    • The entire process will take you less than one hour from start to finish! I know! Amazing!
