Have you ever traveled somewhere and come home reminiscing about something you ate while you were away??? We have! This Copycat McDonald’s Spicy Paneer Wrap came to be after we traveled to India and this sandwich was an absolute lifesaver when we were hungry. My copycat recreation is SO GOOD, I think it might be even better than the real thing. This wrap cannot be found in the US. Not even when McDonald’s did their International menu. You are welcome πŸ‘.

As vegetarians, travel can be exceptionally difficult to find meatless options on the go. Making memories and upholding our promise of vegetarianism are two guiding principals we follow when traveling. We discovered this wrap on the menu in India. So, when you find yourself hungry in another country with limited vegetarian options, McDonald’s just might be the answer you were looking for too 😊. McDonald’s Spicy Paneer Wrap was the answer for us during our visit to India, now we can make it any time right here in the MVF kitchen!

Tara’s Tips for a Perfect Copycat McDonald’s Spicy Paneer Wrap:

  • The paneer is battered in dry and wet ingredients. The dry ingredients are a combination of breadcrumbs and crushed up cheesy/nacho tortilla chips. Use plain breadcrumbs not the Italian flavored ones. Use any cheesy tortilla chip you like.
  • The wet ingredients are a combination of arrowroot and flour and spices. You might need more water than I did to get a good batter consistency. This is how the tortilla chip breading sticks to the paneer without using egg. I love working with arrowroot but it can be tricky at first. The consistency you want is a thin pancake batter like mine in the photos above.
  • Batter it twice. You won’t be sorry. Wet, dry, wet again, dry again.
  • I did not test the recipe baking these paneer slices. Let me know if you tried it. I fried them. Remember, life is about balance πŸ˜‰. Frying something a few times a year is ok. Frying something a few times a week is not ok. Might also work with tofu instead of the paneer but I haven’t tested that.
  • Inside the wrap I made a vegan chipotle mayo. Follow my recipe here. You can use a store bought chipotle mayo (if you eat eggs), or simply sriracha or hot sauce or mustard and ketchup. If you want it to taste EXACTLY like the spicy paneer wrap from McDonald’s then use this sauce from my recipe.
  • Don’t forget to heat your finished copycat wrap in a griddle. That will melt the cheese inside and grill the outside of the wrap.

Copycat McDonald's Spicy Paneer Wrap

October 3, 2019
: 4 wraps

This copycat tastes exactly like the real thing! The Spicy Paneer Wrap is not available in the US so if you aren't going to India any time soon you are going to love this recipe!

Ingredients
  • 4 cups Nacho tortilla chips (grind into crumbs in food processor - should yield 1 1/2 cups crumbs)
  • Bread Crumbs: 1 cup
  • arrowroot powder: 1 cup
  • all purpose flour: 1 cup
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp salt + black pepper
  • 1 1/2 tbsp taco seasoning
  • Paneer: cut into 3 inches x 3 inches x 1 inch pieces (one piece for each of the for four wraps)
  • vegetable or canola oil for frying
  • 1 cup shredded lettuce
  • 1/2 red onion (sliced thin)
  • 4 slices white cheddar cheese
  • 4 large tortillas mustard,
  • chipotle mayo, sriracha, or hot sauce to taste for topping
Directions
  • Step 1 Grind tortilla chips in food processor until coarse bread crumb consistency is achieved. Need to yield 1 1/2 cups when ground.
  • Step 2 Combine tortilla chips, bread crumbs, and salt in a medium shallow bowl. Stir until fully combined. This will be step 2 for the breading.
  • Step 3 In a separate medium shallow bowl, combine arrowroot, flour, taco seasoning, and pepper. Stir until fully combined then slowly add water while stirring until you have a thick liquid consistency. This will be step one for the breading.
  • Step 4 One at a time, dip the paneer pieces in the liquid batter and then the breadcrumb mixture being sure to fully coat all sides of the paneer. Repeat so that there are two coats of both mixtures.
  • Step 5 Transfer to a plate, refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  • Step 6 Line a plate with paper towels. Add 3 inches of oil to a fry pot or pan. Attach a deep fry thermometer. Once the thermometer reaches 360 degrees, add the paneer, two pieces at a time, cook until golden brown on both sides, approximately one minute on each side. Using a slotted spoon, transfer the paneer to the paper towel-lined plate. Repeat the frying process with the other two paneer pieces returning the oil to 360 degrees between batches.
  • Step 7 Assemble your wraps by layering one slice of cheddar cheese, chipotle sauce, lettuce, and onion followed by the cooked paneer (add an optional second slice of cheddar cheese) inside the tortilla. Roll and close both ends.
  • Step 8 Place on a griddle or grill until warm and lightly browned.
  • Step 9 Cut in half and serve with additional chipotle sauce to taste. Enjoy!
