Tara’s Tips For Spicy Garlic Tofu With Vegetables
Tofu
- Use organic, extra-firm tofu
- Bake in the oven as the recipe instructions indicate until lightly golden brown

Chili Garlic Sauce
- I use Huy Fong Chili Garlic Sauce (readily available in most grocery stores + on Amazon)
- You could substitute with sriracha or sambal oelek but you would be missing the garlic so add some in if this is all you have on hand. 2-3 cloves should do or one tablespoon of garlic powder.
- This ingredient brings on the heat, add more if you love spice, cut back if you are not sure. You can always add more at the end.
Cornstarch
- The key ingredient to making the slurry that gives this Spicy Garlic Tofu with Vegetables its texture. Some people prefer to use arrowroot but remember if you choose to substitute arrowroot here, you need to add it in at the end of cooking just before ready to eat because it shouldn’t be cooked at long. Substitute 1:1.
Liquid Aminos
- I prefer to use liquid aminos instead of traditional soy sauce. I believe the nutritional profile is superior when compared to traditional soy sauces. Both are derived from soybeans however, liquid aminos are lower in sodium when compared to soy sauce and are not fermented therefore do not contain wheat or gluten. Both are still high in sodium and add to the unami flavor of a dish.
- If you are looking for a soy replacement, choose coconut aminos which are made from coconuts not soybeans, are gluten free and lower in sodium than the others. Tamari is another option made from soybeans but check the labels as some do contain wheat. Some think tamari has a darker + richer flavor than liquid aminos.
Vegetables
- I chose to use broccoli, carrots, and onions. Alternatively, other veggies that work with this one include snap peas, mushrooms, asparagus tips, or bell peppers.
What to eat with your tofu + veggies
- I chose Right Rice as pictured here. Totally am in love with that stuff recently. However, you could choose white or brown rice, noodles, or even quinoa.

Spicy Garlic Tofu with Vegetables
This recipe for Spicy Garlic Tofu With Vegetables is super simple with only a few ingredients, healthy, easy, and perfectly spicy.
Ingredients
- 14 ounce extra firm tofu, drained and cut into triangles
- 3 tbsp liquid aminos or soy sauce
- 2 tbsp chili garlic sauce (I use Hoy Fung)
- 1 tbsp cornstarch + 3 tbsp water
- 2 cups fresh broccoli florets
- 2 cups sliced carrots
- 1 sliced onion
- crushed peanuts, red pepper flakes, sliced green onions for topping
Directions
- Step 1 Place tofu triangles on a silicone lined baking sheet, bake in a 425 degree F oven for 15 minutes, flip each triangle over and bake for an additional 15 minutes or until tofu is golden brown.
- Step 2 While tofu cooks, heat a medium nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add liquid aminos/soy sauce and onions. Sauté onions for 5 minutes or until translucent.
- Step 3 Next, add chili garlic sauce, carrots and broccoli florets, cover and cook for 5 minutes, stirring a few times.
- Step 4 While vegetables cook, make cornstarch slurry by mixing the cornstarch and cold water in a small bowl until smooth.
- Step 5 Once vegetables are tender, stir in the cornstarch slurry.
- Step 6 Test salt and spice level adding more liquid aminos/soy sauce for more salty taste and more chili garlic sauce for more spice.
- Step 7 When your tofu triangles are golden brown, carefully remove from oven and add to vegetable mixture. Gently stir everything together until all coated with the sauce.
- Step 8 Top with red pepper flakes, crushed peanuts, and/or scallions. Enjoy!
