Guide To Eating Seasonally In Spring
What Does Spring Mean To You? To me, spring means flowers + warmer weather + spring cleaning. Growing up in New York, spring meant that the cold of winter was finally leaving for the year, colorful flowers would grow again, we could be outside without multiple layers of winter clothes, and the days were finally getting longer. For some reason, I feel as though people are in a better mood in spring, am I right?
For some people, spring means cleaning. Maybe that is a good thing for you, maybe not so much! Purging items that you no longer need, cleaning pantries + cabinets + maybe overhauling your diet with the warmer coming?!?! We are meant to eat the foods that grow around us, cleansing + resetting our bodies. Above all, when you eat produce that is in season it is less expensive, higher in nutrients, and much fresher. So, when you are done spring cleaning your pantry, spring clean your diet by looking for these spring fruits + veggies. Perhaps we all could use to add a few things in our lives, not subtract them. By adding lots of healthy spring foods, we naturally crowd out the unhealthy foods + habits that we may have overindulged in over winter.
What Does Eating Seasonally Mean?
As a society, we tend not to eat seasonally as most of us have access to a wide variety of produce all year round. This is a luxury but is it necessarily what is best for us and for the planet as a whole. Just because something is available in the grocery store doesn’t mean it is in season. Simply put, eating seasonally means eating the fruits and vegetables that grow naturally during a specific time of year. Naturally – without genetic modification or intervention. This isn’t typically the way we eat. But, eating seasonally helps ensure your body is nourished with what it needs without lots of chemicals that completely throw your body out of whack. By eating seasonally, we avoid produce that has been ‘forced’ to grow when it isn’t its natural time to grow. We also avoid having our produce travel long distances to reach us. When our out-of-season produce must travel those long distances, it must be picked before it is ripe and therefore does not contain the same nutrients, vitamins, and minerals as its seasonal counterparts.
To help you embrace spring, my tips this week include a complete list of spring foods. I have also included my personal favorites at the bottom with my recipes and how I use them. This list of in-season produce will vary somewhat depending on where you live, and you may also have access to some of these year-round (not just in spring). Trust me here … local, seasonal spring food will taste + look so much better!
