So glad you are here! The holiday season can be a VERY stressful time of the year. My tips this week can help you stay healthy during the holidays and every day!
Tara’s Tuesday Tips: Eat, Drink & Be Healthy This Holiday Season
Think Before You Eat:
- Ask yourself – do I really want this? Is this what my body needs? Be mindful + intentional with your food choices. Think … how does this food make me feel?
Be Careful:
- Food illness and accidents are extremely common during the holidays. Here is how to stay safe: Firstly, after food is cooked, keep hot food hot and cold food cold. Secondly, refrigerate or freeze any perishable food within 2 hours. Most importantly, wash your hands when handling food, and prior to eating or cooking. In addition, be careful with knives, flames, and kids in the kitchen.
Eat Fruits + Vegetables First:
- Try it, it works! Eat all the veggies first, snack on pre-cut apples, carrots, cucumbers, peppers, celery, or grapes. Whatever you like, have it available, washed, and ready to go. Eat the fruits or veggies first before anything else, and it might help you avoid overeating.
Fight Off The Cold Before You Catch It:
- Wash your hands, get some sleep, find a way to manage stress before it drains you physically. Create a calming mantra and repeat it, find some relaxing songs or podcasts, take deep cleansing breaths. Stress and illness are highly related.
Move!:
- Go out for a walk, plan an active holiday outing instead of a sedentary one. Schedule exercise this week with a friend you will not want to let down if you do not show up. Let accountability help you not skip your workouts.
Pack Your Bag:
- I you know you will be out all day shopping or running holiday errands, bring your food with you and a bottle of water. When you let yourself get super hungry, you might eat everything in your path when you finally get the time to eat. Snacks help ward off the hanger.
Stay Hydrated:
- THIS IS SO IMPORTANT! Drink water and more water. Flush out the toxins, prevent constipation, prevent illnesses, and it keeps you feeling full.
Drink Less or Drink Smart:
- My top tip is don’t drink at all, drink less is second best. In my opinion, the calorie count alone in alcohol makes it not worth it. If you do end up drinking alcohol, remember to not drink on an empty stomach, stay hydrated with water, and stay safe.
Bring Your Own Healthy Dishes To The Holiday Party:
- Make lots + share! Being a vegetarian sometimes means that there won’t be food you can enjoy at a party. So, bring some!
Pay Attention To What Really Matters:
- Although food is an extremely important part of the holidays, put the focus on family and friends, laughter and cheer. It really is ok to indulge occasionally. Give yourself permission to do it and move on. Be present, laugh, do something new, and most importantly, be kind + enjoy good food in the company of good people.
Happy Holidays & Be Well,
Tara 💚
