How about a meatless sausage pizza? Yes please! After we went plant-based, I missed eating a really good pizza.  So, I went on a quest to make darn good vegan pizzas.  So happy I did! This Vegan Sausage and Pepper Pizza is made with Beyond Meat sausage links, fresh peppers + onions, and fire roasted tomatoes.  Super easy and I am so happy to add this one to my collection of darn good vegan pizzas!

Tara’s Tips For Perfect Vegan Sausage and Peppers Pizza:

  • Crust:

    • I use a store-bought pizza crust for this recipe.  Pictured here is a fresh Trader Joe’s rectangular crust.  It is perfect for this pizza as it is thick and gets super crispy if you heat it up in the oven first before applying the toppings.
    • If you choose to make homemade pizza crust, that’s great! You can try my recipe for Eggless Cauliflower Pizza Crust (egg-free + dairy-free!) or Homemade Whole Wheat Pizza CrustOne caution with using a homemade crust: be sure that you pre-cook it until slightly golden brown prior to adding the sausage and pepper mixture.

  •  Cheese:

    • I used Violife vegan mozzarella shreds here.  They melted perfectly under the broiler for a minute.  You can use dairy cheese if not vegan.
  • Sauce:

    • To make the sausage and peppers sauce, I started with a can of fire roasted tomatoes.  You will need the large can (28 ounces) to get the ratios right.

  • Peppers:

    • Use bell peppers.  Green, red, yellow, orange, or a mixture of your favorite colors.  2-3 peppers depending on how big they are.
  • Sausage:

    • Beyond Meat Plan-Based Brat or Plant-Based Hot Italian Dinner Sausage both work.  The Hot is spicy, so be careful if you are sensitive to spice.  Beyond Meat are my favorite plant-based sausages for this recipe. I have not tested it with other brands.

Vegan Sausage + Pepper Pizza (Beyond Meat!)

January 5, 2022
: 1 pizza

Vegan Sausage + Pepper Pizza made with Beyond Meat Sausage links, peppers, onions + fire-roasted tomatoes, perfection!

Ingredients
  • 1 store-bought pizza crust
  • 1 large white or yellow onion (sliced)
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 finely chopped garlic clove
  • 28 ounce can diced fire roasted tomatoes
  • 1 tbsp dried Italian her seasoning
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • Beyond Meat Plant-Based Brat Sausage (4 links)
  • 2-3 bell peppers (any color variations you like) sliced/seeds and stem removed
  • 1 cup vegan mozzarella shreds (dairy if not vegan) I used Violife
Directions
  • Step 1 Remove pizza crust from packaging, follow package instructions for heating pizza crust. Some crusts need to be preheated before toppings added.  If using the Trader Joe’s crust like I did, I heated the crust on a pizza pan for 5 minutes in a 450-degree oven for 5 minutes prior to adding toppings in the last step. If you use a homemade crust, be sure to pre-cook the crust until slightly golden brown before applying the sausage and pepper mixture.
  • Step 2 In a large sauce pan place sliced onions, sprinkle with 2 tsp salt, sauté over medium-high heat for 3 minutes, then add garlic and sauté an additional 2 minutes.  If garlic or onion sticks to the pan, sprinkle with 1 tbsp water at a time, continue to sauté.
  • Step 3 Next, add the can of tomatoes, give everything a gentle stir. Then, stir in the Italian seasoning and onion powder. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover, and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  • Step 4 While tomatoes simmer, slice each sausage link into one-inch rounds.
  • Step 5 After the 5 minutes, add the sausage rounds into the sauce.  Give everything a gentle stir and cook for 2 minutes.
  • Step 6 Next, add the sliced peppers into the sauce, stir, cook over low heat for another 5 minutes or until peppers are tender/can be easily pierced with a fork. Test for salt level. Add salt to desired saltiness. If sauce tastes bitter, add 1/2 tsp cane sugar.
  • Step 7 Evenly spread the sausage and pepper mixture over the pizza crust.  Top with shredded cheese. Bake in a 450-degree F oven for 5-7 minutes or until cheese is bubbly.  Optional: turn oven to low broil for the last minute to get the cheese bubbly and crisped. Remove from oven, cut, and serve.  Enjoy!
