Things I Wish My Non-Vegetarian Friends Knew

Things I Wish My Non-Vegetarian Friends Knew

Another addition in my collection of letters. I like to sprinkle in a letter from a food blogger now + then to spice up the Tuesday Tips. If you know me, you know I usually have a lot to say. When I write you a letter, I really have a lot to say, so look out! Anyway, using my little piece of the internet today to speak on behalf of my fellow vegetarians by explaining the 8 things I wish my non-vegetarian friends knew. Have fun with this one.

Tara’s Tuesday Tips:
8 Things I Wish My Non-Vegetarian Friends Knew

A Letter from a Food Blogger

Dear Friends,

On behalf of my fellow vegetarians, there are things we wish you knew. So today I am going to tell you. A wise man once told me, if you want someone to know something, well, then tell them. If you want someone to do something, then ask.

I love you all … vegans, vegetarians, and my meat-eating friends. However, there are a few things that maybe you don’t know about vegetarians. After this letter, now I know you know. Whew.

  1. When we go out to eat together, we don’t mind if you order meat.
  2. Yes, I am getting enough protein, and yes, there is plenty of protein in plants.
  3. The juice from the meat that is on the grill and the spoon, in the broth, and in the gravy is still meat and we don’t care to eat it.
  4. We don’t feel deprived, we aren’t suffering or hungry, and we don’t miss the meat.
  5. Fish is meat. As vegetarians, we don’t eat anything that was once living. Pescatarians and vegetarians are not synonymous terms.
  6. If we ask to bring something to your dinner party, say yes! We love to share our plant foods.
  7. We don’t want to convert you. You do you. We welcome you to our world, but we aren’t on a mission to eradicate the carnivores.
  8. There is absolutely nothing based in real science supporting your claim that your body “needs” meat. If you like it and you want to eat it, it is your body and your right to choose. But please, the details about the time you tried to be vegetarian, and your body deteriorated and your blood chemistry changed is WAY too much information.

Food For Thought

At times, we may seem inflexible and opinionated when it comes to our food. To that, I apologize on behalf of all the vegetarians. We will often pick the restaurant or the meal, and we repeatedly ask you to try our recently invented vegetable made into a mock meat.  For vegetarians, food is more than food. To my meat-eating friends, I understand we might look like a bunch of hippies trying to change tradition and flavor and the familiarity of food. To us, expressing our views through food shows compassion, caring for other living creatures, and prioritizing our health. My letter from a food blogger today is written in hopes of shedding a little humor and a lot of light on a topic that can be quite polarizing. So, I look forward to sharing many meatless meals with you in the future, friends. Above all, I hope you get to enjoy good food in the company of good people, no matter what they are eating.

All the best,

Tara
