Homemade Indian Style Popcorn:

Whirley Pop or Stove-Top Method

Popcorn is probably the most perfect snack on the entire planet.  Yes, I feel that strongly about the absolute perfectness of popcorn.  High in fiber, loaded with antioxidants and polyphenols (the stuff that fights inflammation), high in iron, vegetarian (vegan if you want it to be), gluten free, no fuss to make, guilt-free snack.  High fiber foods keep you fuller longer, take longer to digest, and popcorn has only about 200 calories per 1/4 cup of unpopped kernels plus the calories for the oil you use to pop. What more could you ask for?

Well, I’m going to give you more … Once popped you can spice popcorn so many ways that it becomes a flavorful, savory, unique creation every time you pop some and toss on your flavors.

Today, we combine the world’s perfect snack with spices to create an Indian-flavored treat ready in minutes.

As with my other recipes, follow my tips and it will be fool-proof every time. Adjust the spices to your tastes, add more salt if you like salty, more chili powder if you like spicy.  If you don’t know what a Whirley Pop is, go get one, you won’t be sorry.  Happy popping!

Instructions
In Whirley Pop
  1. Heat oil in pot over medium-high heat, add kernels, close cover, and stir continuously with handle until the popping has slowed down and all kernels are popped, remove from heat, transfer to a bowl and add spices, stir to coat, and enjoy!
Stove-Top Method
  1. Pour oil in pot, turn to high heat, add 2 kernels of popcorn, cover the pot, wait for the 2 kernels to pop, remove pot from heat, add the remaining kernels, cover the pot again, shake to pot to coat the kernels evenly with the oil and let it sit for 1 minute off of the heat. After one minute, put the pot back on the stove, turn on high heat, shake the pot again, place cover on, and in a few minutes the popcorn will pop, keep shaking back and forth during this process to prevent burning, remove the pot from heat when the popping slows down, keep covered off heat until all the popping stops. Transfer into a bowl, add spices, stir to coat and enjoy!
